(Cp. 1 Sam. 22:1. Probably at En-gedi [1 Sam. 24:7,8; 26:9. 2 Sam. 24;16,17. Same word as in 2 Sam. 1:14. Isa. 65:8. Cp. 1 Chron. 21:12,15.], where David probably used the words "Al-tashith" = Destroy not.)

Psalm 57)

1 Be gracious (or favorable) to me, O God, be merciful to me:
For my soul has fled for refuge to You:
Yes, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge,
Until these calamities be overpast. (Or, Until one shall have overpast these calamities.)

2 I will cry to God Most High;
To God that brings to pass, and perfects (or completes) all things on my behalf.
3 He shall send from heaven, and save me
From the reproach of him that would swallow me up. (See 56:1) Selah. (Connecting and emphasizing by repetition David's confidence [that God would assuredly send deliverance], with and because of His loving-kindness and truth)

God shall send forth His loving-kindness (or grace) and His truth.

4 My soul is among lions:
And I lie even among them that are set on fire,
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.

5 Be You exalted, O God, above the heavens;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.

6 They have prepared a net for my steps;
My soul is bowed down:
They have dug a pit before me, (Cp. 7:15)
Into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah. (Connecting the bitterness of his enemies with his assured confidence in God.)

7 My heart is steadfast (Contrast 78:37), O God, my heart is fixed:

I will sing and give praise.
8 Awake up, my glory (put for the tongue or the heart which gives the glory); awake, psaltery and harp:
I myself will awake early.
9 I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples:
I will sing praise to You among the nations.

10 For Your loving-kindness (or grace) is great unto the heavens,
And Your truth unto the skies.

11 Be You exalted, O God, above the heavens:
Let Your glory be above all the earth.

(To the chief Musician, Destroy not.)
