(To the chief Musician. Instruction, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said to him, David is come to the house of Abimelech)

(The use in public worship makes it set forth the condition of national blessing. See 1 Sam. 21:7; 22:18. See sub-scription at end of v.9.)

968 B.C.
Psalm 52)

1 Why boast You Yourself in mischief (relating to Doeg's treachery), O mighty man? (Heb. gibor. Sept = mighty lawless one. It is prophetic, and a type of antichrist. His lawlessness amounts to nothing.)
The loving-kindness (or grace) of GOD (El) endures all the day. (God is with you always.)
2 The tongue devises mischiefs;
Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 You love evil more than good;
And lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. (Connecting the deceitful tongue of Doeg [v.4] with the imprecation on it.)
4 You love all devouring words, (Cp. 1 Sam. 22:18.)
O you deceitful tongue.
5 God shall likewise destroy you for ever,
He shall take thee away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place,
And root you out of the land of the living. Selah. (Connecting God's judgment with the righteous onlookers.)

6 The righteous ones also shall see, and fear,
And shall laugh at him: (I.e. Doeg. Cp. Isa. 14:12-16.)

7 Lo, this is the strong man that made not God his strength; (The Gematria of this sentence = 2,197 [=133].)
But confided in the abundance of his riches,
And strengthened himself in his wickedness. (Base root of the evil that came to Saul.)

8 But I am like a green olive tree (the oil of our people, anointing oil. See Zech. 4:12-16) in the house of God:
I trust in the loving-kindness (or grace) of God for ever and ever.
9 I will praise You for ever, because You have done it: (David ascribes all the glory to his God)
And I will wait (be patient) on Yourself; for it is good before Your saints. (Always hold on to your Father, that is were your wealth truly is. See Ezek. 44.)

(To the chief Musician relating to the great dancings.)
