24:1-9. REPETITIONS FROM EXODUS.

1490 B.C.

Leviticus 24)

1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2 "Command the sons of Israel, that they bring to you pure oil olive beaten for the lamp-stand, to cause the lamps to burn continually.
3 Outside the veil relating to the testimony (or ark of the covenant), in the tent of the assembly, shall Aaron [and his sons] order it from the evening to the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever (see 23:14 and note on 3:17) in your generations.
4 He shall order the lamps upon the pure light-holder (cp. Gen. 1:14, &c. The word "pure" here = purified or ceremonially cleansed: i.e. not for common use) before the LORD continually.
5 And you shall take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals (about 1/2 gal. Only 1 required for the ordinary meal offering [Ex. 29:40. Num. 15:4. 28:9,13, &.]) shall be in one cake.
6 And you shall set them in two piles, six on a pile, upon the purified table before the LORD. (I.e. in the holy place. Hence called "the table of the presence" [Num. 4:7], and the cakes called "the bread of the presence" [Ex. 25:30; 35:13; 39;36]. The Hebrew expression is "bread of ordering" [set in order], "the sets of bread", "the table set in order", in 1 Chron. 9:32; 23:29. 2 Chron. 13:11. Neh. 10:33; and the table in 2 Chron. 29:18. These Hebrew expressions are based on and derived from this verse.)
7 And you shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire to the LORD.
8 On the holy sabbath day (cp. 1 Chron. 9:32) he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the sons of Israel by an everlasting covenant.
9 And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place (8 things were thus consumed by the priests. See 7:9): for it is most holy to him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute."

10-23. EPISODE OF THE BLASPHEMER.

10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel (tradition say he was a Danite) strove together (Cp. Ex. 2:13) in the camp;
11 And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord (Cp. Gen. 4:24. Hence the use of "the name" instead of "Yahaveh"), and cursed. And they brought him to Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) (another blot on this tribe)
12 And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be showed them.
13 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
14 "Bring forth him that has cursed outside the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head (only done in the case of the blasphemer), and let all the congregation stone him. (9 persons stoned. #9 = judgment: The blasphemer, here; the sabbath breaker, Num. 15:36; Achan, Josh. 7:25; Abimelech, Judg. 9:53; Adoram, 1 Kings 19:18 [2 Chron. 10:18]; Naboth, 1 Kings 21:13; Zechariah, 2 Chron. 24:21; Stephen, Acts 7:58; Paul, Acts 14:19 [2 Cor. 11:25].)
15 And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'Whosoever curses his God (Elohim) shall bear his sin.
16 And he that blasphemes the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemes the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.
17 And he that kills (i.e. murder) [the soul of] any man shall surely be put to death.
18 And he that kills a beast (= soul) shall make it good; beast for beast (soul for soul).
19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbor; according as he has done, so shall it be done to him;
20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: according as he has caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.
21 And he that kills a beast, he shall restore it: and he that kills (i.e. murder) a man, he shall be put to death.
22 You shall have rule (or regulation. Heb. judgment), as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.' "
23 And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.
