John 17)
1 These things (i.e. from 13:31 to 16:33) spoke Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to the heaven, and said, "Father, the hour is come; glorify Your Son,
in order that Your Son also may glorify You: (By concurring death, Resurrection. This is for your benefit)
2 Even as You have given Him authority in relation to all flesh, that He should give eternal life and everything that You have given Him, to them. (First-fruits)
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know You are the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. (How many know Him?)
4 I have glorified You on the earth: Having finished the work which You have given Me in order that I should do it. (See Heb. 2:14-18. Defeating death.)
5 And now, O Father, You glorify Me beside Your own Self with the glory which I had beside You before the world was. (See 1:1)
6 I manifested Your name to the people which You gave to Me out of the world: Yours they were, and You gave them to me; and they have kept Your word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever You have given Me are from You.
8 For I have given to them the words which You gave to Me; and they received them, and knew truly that I came out from You, and they believed that You did send me. (It took miracles, but the first-fruit did receive it.)
9 I ask for them: I ask not for the world, but concerning them which You have given Me; for they are Yours. (He's or Advocate. He loves us indeed.)
10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them. (This is a claim of perfect equality. Everything belonging to the Father, from essential being to works, the Son claims as His own.)
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father (when speaking of Himself, the Lord says "Father"; when speaking of His Disciples, "Holy Father"; when speaking of the wold, "Righteous Father". The holiness of God has separated the disciples from the world.), keep in Your own name those which You have given Me, that they may be one (the many numbered body), as We are.
12 When I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name: those that You gave to Me I kept (i.e. guarded. Cp. Luke 2:8 [keep watch]. 1 John 5:21), and none out of them is lost (Gr. appolumi, used of the doom of the sinner. One of the strongest words in the Greek language to express final and irretrievable destruction. He taught them, so they are not lost), but the son of perdition (this expression used here and 2 Thess. 2:3 [the Anti-Christ]. This is the prime of satan's name. Gr. apoleai. See Rev. 9. Ps. 109:6); that the scripture may be fulfilled. (expresses certainty.)
13 And now come I to You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves. (He spoke it in the world so that we would know.)
14 I have given them Your word;
and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (This world age)
15 I pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. (If you use the power, the faith and common sense.)
17 Sanctify (= Hallow. Separation is the idea of the word "holy") them through Your truth: The word that is Yours is the truth.
18 Even as You did sent Me into the world, even so I also sent them into the world.
19 And on behalf of them I dedicate Myself (or consecrate. This shows the meaning of sanctify; not making holy as to moral character, but setting apart for God. The Lord was the anti-type of all the offerings, which were holy to Yehovah.), that they also may be sanctified through the truth. (Trough repentance)

20 I pray not for these alone, but for them also which believe on Me through their word; (Is His word)
21 That they all may be one;
as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You,
that they also may be one in Us:
that the world may believe that You did sent me.
22 And the glory which You have given Me I have given them; that they may be one,
even as We are one: (Its up to you. Understanding the truth equals oneness one word)
23 I in them, and You in Me, that they may be perfected into one;
that the world may know that You did sent Me, and loved them, even as You loved Me. (He's partial to His own. See Rev. 9:4)
24 Father, I will that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me: for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. (His plan was to have children He could trust and love them.)
25 O righteous Father, the world knew You not: but I knew You, and these knew that You did send Me. (Through the miracle and presence.)
26 And I declared (i.e. made known) to them Your name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith You loved Me may be in them, and I in them." (Naturally. This whole chapter beautifully illustrates Pss. 119 and 138:2)
