(A Psalm or Song of Asaph.)

(In this Psalm the enemies of the Sanctuary are warned, and God's People are encouraged.)

Psalm 75)

1 To You, O God, do we give thanks,
  To You do we give thanks: for that Your name is near (It denotes God's saving presence.)
  Men tell of Your wondrous works.

2-8. JUDGMENT. UPRIGHT.
R  S  2,3-. The earth.
    T  -3-. The inhabitants.
   S  -3.  The earth.
    t  4-8. Its inhabitants.

2 The set time has come
  I, even I will judge uprightly. (God will judge fair and right. Each will receive exactly what they have coming to them. For some that will be rewards, for others that will be punishment. See Prov. 21:12.) 3 The earth

  And all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved:
  I have established the pillars of it. (New earth age.) Selah. (Connecting the set time of judgment with the judgment itself as it will affect the wicked and the righteous. God will measure, arrange and equalize the very foundations that hold everything up.)

4 I said to the arrogant, "Deal not foolishly:"
  And to the wicked, "Lift not up the horn:" (Put for pride connected with the wearing of it. He pleaded with them.)
5 Lift not up your horn on high:
  Nor speak arrogantly of the Rock. (Be pliable. Those with a stiff neck might have their neck broken.)
6 For promotion comes neither from the east, nor from the west,
  Nor from the south. (Therefore it comes from the north. The immediate place of God's throne, to which Satan aspires. Cp. Isa. 14:12-14. See Job 26:7. This is where promotion comes from)
7 But God is the judge:
  He puts down one, and sets up another. (He does this fairly. Promotion comes from the north where God's throne is located. According to their works, some will be promoted, and some will be demoted.)
8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup (symbolical of God's judgment. Isa. 51:17-23 [cp. 19;14]. Hab. 2:15,16. Ezek. 23:31,34,&c. Jer. 25:27; 48:26; 49:12. This was the cup that Jesus asked pass from Him, the cup of God's wrath.), and the wine is foaming;
  It is full of spice (cp. Rev. 14:10); and He pours out of the same:
  But the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
9 But I will declare for ever;
  I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. (I.e. the God of Grace, who met Jacob when he had nothing, and deserved nothing but wrath.)

10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off;
  But the horns of a righteous one shall be exalted. (Again, you get what you deserve. You reap what you sow. Repent of your sins, and ask God for forgiveness. Serve God and love Him. If you do these things, there is no reason to fear judgment. Judgment will be rewards and blessings for you.)

(To the chief Musician on smitings.)

(Refers to the smitings of the wicked in judgment.)
