(A Psalm by David.)

Psalm 139)

1 O Lord, You have searched me (searched for treasures or secrets), and seen me. (So as to understand)

2 You know my down-sitting and my uprising, (Put for all movements)
You understand my inward thought afar off.
3 You scrutinize my path and my bed,
And have inspected all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue,
But, lo, O LORD, You know it on every side (or, the whole of it).
5 You have beset me behind and before, (Put for every direction.)
And laid Your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain to it.

7 Where shall I go from Your spirit?
Or where shall I flee from Your presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, You are there:
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, (See note on sub-scription of Ps. 21.)
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall Your hand lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me;"
Even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yes, the darkness cannot be to dark for You;
But the night shines as the day:
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
13 For You have possessed my reins:
You have woven me together (cp. Job 10:8,11) in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise You; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
Marvelous are Your works;
And that myself knows right well.
15 My frame (Heb. bone, as in Gen. 2:21,22) was not hid from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully (Heb. = embroidered) wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes did see my substance, yet being unfinished;
And in Your book all my members were written,
Which they should be fashioned (or, The days which were ordered),
When as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious also are Your desires to me, O GOD! (El)
How great is the sum of them! (Denoting the fullness or vastness of them.)
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand:
When I awake, I am still with You.

19 Surely You will slay a lawless one (This is Omnipotent work. Cp. Job 40:9-14.), O GOD (Eloah):

Depart from me therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
20 For they speak against You rebelliously (pre-meditated),
And Your enemies take Your name in vain.
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate You?
And do not I loathe those that rise up against You?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred:
I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart:
Try me, and know my distractions (or cares):
24 And see if there be any painful (or grievous) way (put for the grief produced by it) in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting. (Put for the happiness which is the effect and end resulting in everlasting life.)
