Psalm 129)

1 "Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth,"
May Israel now say:
2 "Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth:

Nevertheless they have not prevailed against me.

3 The plowers plowed upon my back:
They made long their furrows."

4 The LORD is just: (I.e. in His judgments.)
He has cut asunder the cords (i.e. of bondage) of the lawless ones.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back
That hate Zion.
6 Let them be as grass upon the housetops, (The reference is to the reply of Yehovah concerning Sennacherib, which Hezekiah quotes here. Cp. 2 Kings 19:25,26. Isa. 37:27.)
Which withers before it grows up: (Either unsheathes itself into flower, or is plucked up.)
7 Wherewith the mower fills not his hand;
Nor he that binds sheaves his bosom.
8 Neither do they which go by say,
"The blessing of the LORD be upon you:
We bless you in the name of the LORD."
