1: And (note the many "ands" throughout the chapter for emphasizing each particular act) the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (Indicating a new subject. See 5:14. The ritual is prescribed in Ex. 28:1-43 and 29:1-39. Now the appointment to the priestly office resumes the instructions broken off in Exodus.)
2: "Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;
3: And gather you all the congregation together to the entrance of the tent of the assembly."
4: And Moses did as the Lord commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together to the entrance of the tent of the assembly.
5: And Moses said to the congregation, "This is the thing which the Lord commanded to be done." (See Ex. 28:1-43; 29:1-37; now made known to the People.)
6: And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. (= the "divers washings" of Heb.6:2. After this, all ceremonial washings done by the person for themselves. These are rendered "baptisms" in Sept. of Lev. 11:25,40; 17:15,16; 14:8; 15:8,13,16,21,22,27. Extended to "clothes", Lev.11:25 &c.)
7: And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle (not the band of the ephod called the "embroidered girdle", but the one of needlework, 16:4 and Ex. 28:39), and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the embroidered girdle of the ephod, and bound it to him therewith.
8: And he put the breastplate upon him: also (thus distinguishing these two stones from the twelve stones, which were quite distinct. Cp. Ex. 25:7) he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim. (see Ex. 28:30)
9: And he put the turban upon his head; also upon the turban, even upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown (see Ex.3:5); as the Lord commanded Moses.
10: And Moses took the anointing oil (see Ex.30:26-30; 40:9-11, and cp. Ex. 30:23-25), and anointed the dwelling place (of Yehovah) and all that was therein, and sanctified them. (= set them apart, see Ex. 29:37; 30:29-30)
11: And he splashed thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar (cp. Matt. 23:19) and all his vessels, both the laver and his base, to set them apart.
12: And he poured (not touched with the finger, as in the case of the common priest, but profusely poured. See Ps. 133:2) of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.
13: And Moses brought Aaron's sons (these could not be invested till after Aaron. Cp. John 17:19), and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put (Heb. = bound) bonnets upon them; as the Lord commanded Moses.
14: And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.
15: And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it (set it apart), to make reconciliation upon it.
16: And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and flap above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned (as incense, i.e. upwards to God) it upon the altar.
17: But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt down (i.e. not to rise to God) with fire outside the camp (cp. Ex. 29:14. Lev.4:12,18,21;6:11; 16:27. John 19:17,18. Acts 7:58); as the Lord commanded Moses.
18: And he brought the ram for the burnt offering (see Ex. 29:15-18): and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.
19: And he killed it; and Moses cast (not the same word as v.15) the blood upon the altar round about.
20: And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses burnt (as incense) the head, and the pieces, and the fat.
21: And he washed (see v.6) the inwards and the legs in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a savor of satisfaction (see 1:9, and Gen. 8:21), and an offering made by fire to the Lord; according as the Lord commanded Moses.
22: And he brought the other ram (mentioned in v.2. See Ex. 29:19-24), the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.
23: And he slew (same word as "killed" in vv.15,19) it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot. (To point out listening, the working, and the walking in he ways of Yehovah.)
24: And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses splashed the blood upon the altar round about.
25: And he took the fat (see Ex. 29:22-25), and the rump (= the fat tail, see 3:9, cp. Ex.29:22), and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the flap above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder:
26: And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the Lord, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:
27: And he put all upon Aaron's hands, and upon his sons' hands, and waved them for a wave offering before the Lord. (See Ex. 29:27)
28: And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them (as incense) on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations (cp. 6:19-23) for a savor of satisfaction: it is an offering made by fire to the Lord.
29: And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the Lord: for of the ram of consecration it was Moses' part; as the Lord commanded Moses.
30: And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and splashed it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.
31: And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, "Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of the assembly: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I have been commanded, saying, 'Aaron and his sons shall eat it.'
32: And that which remains of the flesh and of the bread shall you all burn down with fire.
33: And you all shall not go out of the entrance of the tent of the assembly in seven days (Aaron consecrated on the eight day, after waiting seven days), until the days of your consecration (setting apart) be at an end: for seven days shall he consecrate you. (See Ex. 29:41)
34: As he has done this day, so the Lord has commanded to do, to make an atonement for you. (See Ex. 29:33.)
35: Therefore shall you all abide at the entrance of the tent of the assembly day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the Lord, that you all die not: for so I am commanded."

36: So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses. (Put for what is performed by it. Hence a common idiom for instrumentality or agency; ESPECIALLY in writing.)
